Yallingup Single Fin Theory 13

Dunsborough Mitre 10 were again major sponsors of The Yallingup Single Fin Theory, held over the weekend 17th & 18th of November. This legendary event is organized by local board shaper Chris Chapman & chef Aaron Carr. Its an event that brings the nostalgia of the 70's & its eccentric ways to the clean lines of Yallingup Beach. 'Taco' was the stoked recipient of the wheelbarrow & organic gardening products donated by Dunsborough Mitre 10. Can't wait for next year!

As the sun rose over the Yallingup hills on Saturday the 17th, so too did the excitement and expectations of the gathering surfers on the fabled grass area of Yals main break... The legendary Yallingup single fin theory had arrived, and it was evident early that it indeed was a theory, and not a competion, as it was about colour, music, friends, jive and the feeling of riding a highline stylishly across an indian ocean crystal curl...

Conditions were perfect with sunny clear skies, a groomed offshore wind and a consistant 3-4ft swell pushing onto the reef... 40 of the areas finest were assembled, as Toddy, Antman, Spiff and Chappy set up camp and got the show underway.. Straight out of the gates and the surfing was rad, with soul arch bottom turns, layback snaps, and drawn out full rail carves being splashed across the blue walls like a hot buttered airbrush spray.. Surfers, friends, families and old local legends congregated throughout the day to check out the increasingly impressive display of 70's boards, to soak up the atmosphere, and to witness the surfing finesse..

Former champion Gold Tooth Robbo was looking in form early, getting spat out clean from two tubes in one surf, while Danny Dingle fell in love with a single, slipping gracefully down some long lefthanders.. Gibbo was solidly flying the flag for Margaret River, looking for the upset win, as was the barrel master Dingbat, representing gracetown.. Crowd favourite and underdog Jason Lagoon Simpson was quietly making his way through, but it was usual style lords Sammy Hanson, Taco, Antman, and Sammy Tucker who prevailed to make the final four.. With an MP-like tactic, Taco dissapeared in the bushes before the final, before reappearing at the bubble to try and twist the minds of the other contenders... But alas, Sammy Hanson could not be quelled, and he flew down a big right-hander, fast, gracefull and full of power, and the trophy was his!

The presentations followed at the three bears tavern, 70's dress was highly recommended, and the famous raffle including a brand new single fin from Chapstar Surfboards, a trip to Bali from Harvey World Travel Dunsborough, a wheelbarrow stacked with plenty of gardening gear from Dunsborough Mitre 10,  a $500 voucher from Country Waves and many more groovy prizes, was a definate highlight..

The music was loud, the dancefloor was happening, and laughter and smiles were infectious... It was definately an event for the ages, with so many local people and buisinesses giving their support, it is obvious that the legened of the single fin theory grows stronger each year, and we wait for next years event with baited breath..
